Conservation of endangered bird species populations in natural habitats of the Danube inland delta | In the past, the Danube inland delta represented one of the largest and most diverse natural wetland complexes in Central Europe. Large parts of it have been destroyed during last decades; presently habitat loss and destruction continues as a result of former river regulations and poor area management. The decreasing habitat quality and several other factors (e.g. unregulated disturbance by man) have lead to major decrease of populations of the typical floodplain bird species – black stork (Cicconia nigra), night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), little egret (Egretta garzetta), sand martin (Riparia riparia). Ecological Restoration of Mata-Radeanu Complex | The Lower Prut Floodplain Natural Park is the entrance of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. It lies on the flyway route of hundreds of migratory birds. The ecological importance of the park has been recognised at national as well as international levels.The project objective is to improve the conservation status of 13 priority and more than 50 non-priority bird species listed in the Birds Directive and present in the Lower Prut Floodplain Natural Park. A main aim is to resolve the environmental problems caused by human activities such as agriculture, pasturage, fishery and tourism in and around the Park. To deal with the degradation of hydrological structures, the project also aims to re-establish the ecological balance of the lakes, including improvement of the water level and its maintenance. The results of the project are linked by the designation of Mata – Radeanu Complex as Special Protected Area NATURA 2000 within The Lower Prut Floodplain Natural Park. Benchmarking river habitat improvement. | River ecosystems have witnessed a long history of human pressure, particularly the disruption of freshwater fish populations. The awareness of this situation has led to many habitat improvement projects, with a variable degree of success. In natural situations, fish populations co-inhabit throughout the hydrological cycle with different degrees of adequacy, and the sequence of favourable and unfavourable conditions dictates abiotic constraints and biotic interactions that shape the final biological assemblages. LIFE FOR THE BOURGAS LAKE - Ensuring Conservation of Priority Bird Species and Coastal Habitats at the Bourgas Natura 2000 Wetland Sites | The Bulgarian Black Sea coast consists of a complex of coastal wetlands providing important breeding and wintering habitats for a significant number of bird species. The complex is an important migration stop for hundreds of thousands of birds flying on the East-European migratory route “Via Pontica.” Notably, these coastal wetlands are the most significant breeding, wintering and staging sites in Europe for four globally endangered birds: pygmy cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus); Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus); white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala); and ferruginous duck (Aythya niroca) as well as the bittern (Botaurus stellaris). Despite the wetlands being classified as Natura 2000 sites and being protected in specific areas according to national legislation, there are still major threats to these birds that need to be tackled. Many of these come from the immediate proximity of the major Black Sea port and tourist destination, Burgas. Effect of meander restoration on macroinvertebratebiodiversity: the case of the Borová stream(Blanskí½ Les, Czech Republic) | This study brings a view on the effects of restoration of a formerly channelized small submontane stream situated in the Blanský Les Protected Landscape Area (South Bohemia, Czech Republic) on macroinvertebrate assemblages as an indicator group. The restoration project was carried out during two stages (1998 and 2000). It consisted of excavating a new channel to restore the historic meandering pattern. The evaluation of this project is primarily based on the comparison of composition between pre-restoration (1995) and post-restoration (2000–2003) macroinvertebrate samples focusing on species richness, species composition, and representation of rare Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera species. The analyses showed a substantial increase in species richness that was especially prominent shortly after the restoration intervention. This increase was not only due to the creation of lentic habitats, but was even observed at every single sampling site of the stream. The DCA ordination of species composition of the pre- and post-restoration sites indicated a considerable increase in the between-site diversity. This was apparently caused mainly by the establishing of lentic habitats, whereas diversity of lotic sites showed only a slight increase, which was most prominent during the last year of the sampling period. The shift in the species composition was profound for lotic sites as well. Although the restoration intervention considerably increased species richness and markedly changed species composition, there was no detectable increase of rare or vulnerable Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera species. | Revitalisation of the Borova stream, Czech Republic |
